This year’s Scribendi staff started the semester with a fun and enlightening Sunday evening team building workshop. Faculty advisor Amaris Ketcham enlisted the help of Danielle, a former Scribendi staff member and editor who currently works with the UNM Global Education Office. For many years Danielle has led team building exercises in the annual workshops that help that year’s Scribendi staff get to know each other. Not only did the various exercises spark laughter from all thirteen Scribendi members, but there was also quite a lot of learning taking place as well. Communication was an important focus with discussions on the vital role of body language and tone of voice, the fact that most conflicts are a result of miscommunication, and how to deal with the inevitable chaos that everyone will most likely feel while working on the magazine over the next 10 months. After a pizza refreshment, Scribendi office-manager Rowan led a hands-on activity on creating an environment to grow mushrooms. The somewhat complicated process involves coffee grounds in a mason jar; within about a month, the Scribendi staff members just might be eating homegrown fungi!
