Submission Requirements and
Categories
Requirements
Scribendi accepts work conforming to the
following requirements:
• To be considered for publication in Scribendi, submittors must
be undergraduate students currently enrolled in an accredited Honors program
or college in the Western Regional Honors Council area.
Further information on eligibility requirements may be found on our Eligibility
page.
• All submissions must be accompanied by a completed Scribendi Submission
Form. Failure to comply with the specifications
given on the Submission Form will result in disqualification. Follow
the procedures on the Submission Form closely. Our Instructions
page provides details about preparing this form.
• Regular submissions are limited to 3
works per category (see category requirements below) or 5 works total,
if submitting in multiple categories. Cover designs submissions are limited
to 5 works, but these may be submitted in addition to regular
submissions, as submissions for cover design are not added
to your total count of works from other categories.
• Regular submissions must be submitted
no later than Friday, October 9, 2009 (Electronic submissions
must be timestamped by 12:00 midnight, in-person submissions hand-delivered
by 4:30 p.m., and snail mail submissions postmarked by 5:00 p.m.).
• Cover design contest submissions must be submitted no
later than Friday, November 6, 2009 (Electronic submissions must be
timestamped by 12:00 midnight, in-person submissions hand-delivered
by 4:30 p.m., and snail mail submissions postmarked by 5:00 p.m.).
• Works submitted to Scribendi may not have been published
elsewhere or and may not be currently submitted to another publication.
Categories
The categories in which Scribendi accepts submissions and the requirements
for each category are described below.
Essays/Creative Non-Fiction
Any type of non-fiction, fact-based prose including,
but not limited to, memoirs, short stories, personal essays, lyrical
essays, literary journalism, travel writing, etc. Creative Non-fiction
is usually a combination of scene, reflection, and exposition generally
based on a person’s life or personal experience. Scribendi limits submissions in this category to three essays, no longer than 5,000 words each, titled. Untitled works will not be accepted.

Poetry
Any style of poetry including, but not limited to, sonnet, limerick, haiku, acrostic, pantoum, villanelle, free verse, etc. Scribendi limits submissions in this category to three poems, no longer than five pages each, titled. Untitled works will not be accepted.
Short Fiction
Any type of short fiction including, but not limited to, short story, micro-fiction, flash fiction, tall tales, etc. Scribendi limits submissions in this category to three works of short fiction, no longer than 5,000 words each, titled. Untitled works will not be accepted.

Foreign Language
Scribendi welcomes foreign language submissions in any of the above literary categories. Works may be written in any language other than English, but must be accompanied by an English translation, with appropriate acknowledgements to the translator, if applicable. Scribendi limits submissions in this category to three pieces, each of which must be titled. Untitled works will not be accepted.
Visual Art
Any type of two- or three-dimensional artwork
in any medium (excluding digital art, see Digital Art category). Scribendi limits
submissions in this category to three works, each of which must be
titled. Untitled works will not be accepted. We accept Visual Art submissions
in any of the following formats, listed in order of preference:
1) Electronic files -- digital photographs of
the artworks, submitted electronically via email;
2) CD/DVDs -- digital photographs of
the artworks stored on a CD/DVD; must
be accompanied by a hard copy print (the hard copy is to make sure we print the
colors as the artist wishes);
For #1 and #2 above submissions must be saved as .tiff
or .eps files, without color transfer
functions, in a PC-compatible format with these settings:
DPI should be 300 or more; image size 8" x 10"; color format should
be CMYK, not RGB or other color formats. Files sent in RGB
mode will result in incorrect color reproduction. Also, if possible, avoid saving with any
kind of compression, such as LZW or .jpg. IMPORTANT NOTE: If your email program will not allow you to send an uncompressed file, send your work in compressed form and write a note on the form in the box with your bio that says something like "If accepted, I am able and willing to provide a non-compressed file of this submission." Then, if your work is selected, our staff will work with you about getting us a non-compressed digital file.
3) Slides -- slides in standard size reproduced
from film; must be accompanied by a hard copy print (the hard copy is to make
sure we print the colors
as the artist wishes);
4) Prints -- non-digital photographs printed
from film.
Photography
Black and White, Color, or any combination of
the two. Scribendi limits submissions in this category to
three photographs, titled. Untitled works will not be accepted. We
accept Photography submissions in any of the following formats, listed
in order of preference:
1) Electronic files -- digital photographs submitted
electronically via email;
2) CD/DVDs -- digital photographs
stored on a CD/DVD; must be accompanied by a hard copy print (the hard copy is
to make sure we print the colors as the artist wishes):

Digital Art
Any work of art that is either entirely or primarily
computer-generated. Works that use only minimal use of digital methods
are discouraged. Scribendi limits submissions in this category
to three works, each of which must be submitted as a digital file on
CD or electronically. All Digital Art submissions must be titled. Untitled
works will not be accepted. We
accept Digital Art submissions in any of the following formats, listed
in order of preference:
1) Electronic files -- work submitted electronically
via email;
2) CD/DVDs -- work stored on a CD/DVD must
be accompanied by a hard copy print (the hard copy is to make sure we print
the colors as the artist wishes).
All digital art submissions must be saved as
.tiff or .eps files, without color transfer functions, in a PC-compatible

Cover Designs
Any form of art including visual, photography, and digital art.
Scribendi limits submissions in this category to five works.
However, you may submit cover design submissions in addition
to regular submissions, as submissions for this category are not added
to your total count of works from other categories. Cover submissions
do not require a title. However, if Cover Design submissions
are judged unsuitable or cost-prohibitive, the Scribendi staff
reserves the right to not choose any of the submissions for the
cover of the next issue. All cover design submissions must be submitted
as digital files saved as .tiff or .eps files, without color transfer
functions, in a
PC-compatible format with these settings:

Image size 8" wide x 8.5 tall (back)
+ .25 x 8.5 (spine) + 8" wide x 8.5 tall (front). All parts of the
image should be connected together into one file that has the dimensions
of 16.25" wide x 8.5" tall. Picture the book lying open and face down;
